This was another FHGV poster offer from Mr Sperry that I couldn’t refuse; I wasn’t familiar with the band’s music at all, and to most people the term “psychedelic” doesn’t exactly come to mind when thinking of descriptions of their music. Thus, a challenge! So, I wiki’d the band and did some googling of the band’s images and dug up some mp3′s to listen to. During the searches I didn’t come up with much in terms of imagery, but they did have a noted history of having some pretty “out there” interest in the “occult”.

So I decided to create something entirely custom & out of left field, going with an occult vibe. Pretty much everything you see was hand sketched or hand-traced and redrawn in Illustrator. I went pretty nuts on the color separations, especially the silver base coat. Ron called time out and urged me to go total hippy and do a rainbow blend instead of black on all of them, which would have taken a lot longer, but we did some and they are very nice. But I still like the black, it looks like leather. anyhow, enough rambling… Here’s the poster:

Sly and The Family Stone – Frosted Steel Edition
Being the first major print that I designed & did all the color separations all on my own, it was also the 1st print I used Firehouse’s signature metallic silver as a major design element, as well as utilizing it’s electrachrome™ enhancing properties. This was printed on Chuck Sperry’s Press at the Firehouse, so that was a first for me as well – A major learning experience, to say the least. With several other projects happening at the shop at the same time, it took over 3 days to print around 160 copies, plus these few on steel.

By late Friday afternoon, day of show, the posters were just dry enough to get them trimmed, packed & loaded into the car & then a long drive during Friday rush hour to North Santa Rosa. As soon as I cracked open the box, I started signing them at the booth, with people lining up to buy them , excited – (yet suspicious that Sly would actually show up) – they were buying them up as soon as I signed each one, so the edition never got numbered. I was so overwhelmed that I didn’t even think of it till it was way too late. But, Sly was late, it gave us some extra “Lobby Time” & sold a few extra copies that night. After Sly’s 27 minute performance, people were leaving – not very happy – and not stopping at the merch or refreshment area’s afterwards. There’s a great story of the events surrounding the events of that performance posted here: Sly Stone Santa Rosa

To clear up the edition count confusion, a total number of 7 steel sheets were printed , 2 of which were not printed with the black plate, so technically this is a Frosted Steel Variant Edition of 5. In the excitement of printing my first major recording artists Poster, I gave one each to Ron and Chuck and 1 to someone I don’t recall that would not have passed my QC. I can account for only 3 now, including just 1 “variant variant” without the black plate – which will go into the permanent Archives.

I wanted the silver plate texture behind the black to look like stone, as well as random “splashes” of color in the split-fountain that goes over Sly and the lettering. That “split fountain” plate that covers all of the lettering and the central image was just one screen, so throughout the edition, the color shifted quite a bit. I also printed a tinted glossy over-print on the lettering, setting design elements on a different spacial plane than the rest of the design (as seen in the very bottom detail photo as squiggly lines over the text).

Ziggy Stardust Red Vic Movie Poster
This silkscreen poster was designed and hand printed by Dave Hunter at Hangar18 in West Oakland, CA. – with special assist by Santi Pozzi, a talented and emerging silkscreen poster artist from Argentina. Completely custom blended inks including a tinted silver metallic under base and metallic glitter gold make up this 5 color screen print. We printed an edition of 100, plus a handful of variants on a variety of substrates and color combos. Some of the prints were quick-dried with closely placed fans to bring out a crackled finish in the red plate, adding a nice aged finish. Constellation names in the star map are replaced with song titles that were performed in the film. Special thanks to Santi for going the extra long hours to finish the final color, the custom gold, which was extremely critical for precision registration, especially when printing by hand.

Collapse Movie Poser – Red Vic Movie House
Collapse of the Industrial Empire? End of Peak Oil and the devastation that will ensue? Sounds like ripe picking for a propaganda movie poster image! The title and content alone inspired me to create this photographic collage of mayhem and destruction, all surrounding a seemingly unscathed and perhaps Mastermind of the Collapse – represented here by the corporate or even presidential Grim Reaper. Designed, hand printed and racked by Dave Hunter with pigment alchemy & split fountain expertise by Ron Donovan at Hangar18 aka The Firehouse. Printed with EyeFrye™ Fluorescent Inks, black light tested and approved.

Now, Meet Michael Ruppert. A former LA police officer turned independent reporter, he predicted the current financial crisis in his self-published newsletter, From the Wilderness, at a time when Wall Street and Washington analysts were still in denial. Ruppert analyzes the details of the present economic crisis from his unique viewpoint and convincingly puts forth that it is symptomatic of nothing less than the collapse of industrial civilization itself.

Machete – but he has a lot more knives than just machetes! Designed by Don Juan and Typography translations and Habanero toothpaste supplied by Don Renaldo. This was yet another fun poster to print, the background is coated with gobs of chicano asphalt from the gritty alleys of the Southern border with one pissed off Hombre staring at you, looking like you just might be his next victim, with his blood spattered machete’s at the ready! Movie credits are subtly embossed into the asphalt background. A Grind-House homage must have for the man cave!

Infected Mushroom – Regency Theater – FHGV91
We had a blast printing this Neon Rose influenced print (forever thanks to Victor Moscoso). Coming full circle 44 years after some of Victor’s first concert posters for shows at rock and roll’s historic junction of Sutter & Van Ness in San Francisco – once home to the Avalon Ballroom, started by Chet Helms and the Family Dog – who undoubtedly published some of the worlds best concert posters by artists like Moscoso, Mouse & Kelley and my favorite artist in the world, Rick Griffin.

Printed on Chuck Sperry’s Press, this is a 2 screen print with custom blended opposing Split-Fountain fluorescent inks. Due to the nature of split-fountain ink blends, the ink tends to move around the screen, making each print’s color blending unique. I think that from the time Mr Sperry called to see if I had time to design and print a poster to the time when I walked into the production office at the Regency, about 52 hours had passed. I couldn’t have pulled this off without Ron’s expertise; both his masterful ink mixing alchemy and his (insert explicative) skill of corralling the inks on the screen, maintaining a somewhat consistent blend for almost 400 impressions (2 color blends X2).
And Teddy was heard muttering between hysterical bouts of laughter “I Dare Say That Mushroom Was Infected!”

The Neville Brothers & Dr John – Regency Theater, SF FHGV#60
It was an honor to be given the chance to design this poster and print it at The Firehouse’s Hangar18 with Chuck Sperry. Bringing some of my design/print concepts to his well established printing quiver, his experienced eyes quickly saw some problems, but Chuck was willing to work with them to see the project through.

One thing that I love about working with other artist/printers is the exchange and melding of techniques – and it is always important to me to acknowledge that exchange of skilled technique. The silk screen posters that we make – both of us having been given solid – yet hard earned – schooling by Ron Donovan – take tremendous amounts of time, knowledge, effort, skill and good old repetition! It’s interesting to observe how each of us have interpreted and executed what we’ve learned, and certainly ‘borrowed’ from each other and unquestionably developed our own printing styles as one should. I am humbly grateful to have contributed techniques and concepts that I dreamed up that remain in use at the Firehouse – a mutual exchange od sorts between peers for access to their gear and knowledge!

I’ve always enjoyed the music of New Orleans and wanted to integrate the masks of Mardi Gras… so, I collected the parts & built the central image entirely of photos supposedly from New Orleans. Once I Gave the mask a stone-carved finish, I created the lettering & border w/out a color palette, But by the time I had the shadowing dialed, I knew how many colors & what they should be: 5. Starting with the 1.) Firehouse base silver, which creates all the textures & embossing (see lower photo below). 2.) a split fountain from yellow>green>blue, 3.) a matte black inside the border, pushing the central image forward 4.) a secret Firehouse shadow recipe and then 5.) a gloss black for all the detailed line-work & sealing the remaining elements together.

Weird Owl Live at the Comet Club
I often get asked to do posters for bands I’ve never heard of, and this was one of those. Designed by myself and printed with Ron at Hangar18, this 8 color poster was all about breaking into new print realms – which is why I love printing with Ron, he is usually more than willing to take the time to push the limits into new and untested territories, definitely nerve-wracking for a production with a deadline, but what the heck, right? Using my metallic under-base textures as an integral design element and printing transparent mezzotints and opaque inks over the metallic design base, we created a mind-bending poster with subtle gradients, overlaying gloss patterns – tying it all together with the white and gold as the “key plates”.

Santigold Warfield Theater – FHGV#40
OMG. Here’s one worth getting for your lady! Who can resist grabbing this amazingly printed Santigold Zebra Purse while adding some more posters to your collection? You can even really go for it with one of the very affordable sparkle variants. All in all this was a fun project, and… she loved it. Ron and I ran into Santi at the backstage entrance and showed her a copy of the print. She especially loved how I worked all the show info into the buckle, keeping the Purse the focus of the print, brought to the fore-front with the subtle contrast of the matching zebra stripe background. There’s nothing better than hitting a home run for the artist with a surprise poster! Lots of depth and hidden textures / eye candy in this poster, which changes color and dimension as the lighting and viewing angle shift throughout the day.

West Fest Concert Poster
Printed at Hangar 18 by Self-Replicating Elves eating cranberries under cover of night, this is No.3 of an Official Edition of 4 Different Limited Edition Silk Screen Posters for “West Fest”, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, held at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park. This design is an homage to Rick Griffin, and his signature use of a Hopi Mask as the setting sun. The majority of this poster was hand sketched, including the typography, inked in and then scanned into my computer, which I used to clean up the layout, add in the silver texture base coat and separate the colors. Ron and I printed split fountain blends with a combination of transparent process inks (blues) and opaque fluorescent “EyeFrye”™ inks (yellow, orange, red) in order to allow the silvers to shine chromatically through the blue, and use the silver under the fluorescents as an “embossing” effect. This print, like many that I design and print, reveals different patterns and colors as the lighting and viewing angles shift throughout the day.

Malleus, Chuck Sperry and Ron Donovan created the other prints of this edition.

Alton Kelley Tribute Poster
My tribute to Kelley, what else more is there to say? I miss him and Rick Griffin a Lot! Both of those guys have been major influences on my art. Although not very visible in this photo, there is subtle metallic pin-striping surrounding the engine block. The good folks at Monolith Press did a wonderful job printing this on short notice for me, as the guys from the Firehouse were in Europe or maybe even doing community service – I can’t remember!, they have a thicker metallic base so it doesn’t have that punchy embossed texture, but the split fountain is killer and I am very happy with the results.

GWAR – Regency Theater – FHGV#84
While making this poster, I set a limit for myself: 3 colors and make Gwar a psychedelic poster in the tradition of the original SF posters artists with the screen printing technology of today. I Printed these two-up, due to not only the ongoing dilemma of last minute deadlines and artists working best under pressure, but also to leave a smaller carbon footprint in making posters. The reds in this poster glow under a black light, and the band’s characters subtly emerge from the black background from different viewing angles.
Chuck and I printed this together and delivered them to the production office where two of Gwar’s members were there to great us (“It looks like YOU were influenced by Rick Griffin” I think is was the drummer who said that to me and for sure – Rick was and always be my favorite – they loved the print and after checking out a bit of the show, we headed out for a quick but well deserved sushi and recap of a smooth afternoon of printing).
